NEW SELFISH GIANT (for Key Stage 1)
Our original version of The Selfish Giant, devised for whole school use at Primary level, or for children at Key Stage 2, has always been our ‘flagship’ musical. It has been performed all over the world in venues that include The Royal Opera House and prepared for performance in the presence of HM The Queen. Music Service providers have used the work in large scale concerts involving up to 400 children and celebrities, teachers, children and parents have written testimonials to its success. Spike Milligan praised the work, loving its ‘simple magic’. Infants and younger children that have participated in a full production, where older children have taken the major responsibilities, have loved the story and songs. Teachers and parents frequently ask us to prepare a version for younger children so we are pleased and excited to be able to offer this special adaptation of our highly acclaimed musical specifically for nursery and KS1 children.
How does this differ from the original?
The main difference between this version and the original is that the story finishes before the Giant dies. He learns the error of his ways and turns his garden into a children’s playground. We have removed two difficult songs, PARADISE and FOREVER FRIENDS. You can hear the six remaining songs, PARTY AWAY, BUILD A WALL, GIFT OF LOVE, CHANGING SEASONS, KNOCK IT DOWN and THE GIANT’S GARDEN, together with extracts from the Overture and narration by clicking on the titles above.
The CD contains a complete recording of the whole work, beginning with the Overture, moving on to Johnny Morris’ narration of the story with songs and sound effects interspersed at appropriate points and ending with a repeat of the Overture to allow the cast to assemble for a bow. The simplest productions would allow you to switch on the CD player at Track 1 and let it run until Track 18. If you choose this method you will be using the vocal guide tracks and additional singers will boost your choir. Your children would be free to sing, dance or mime with the benefit of an extra ‘choir’ and a storyteller to direct the action. The Overture will be placed at the beginning and the end, providing music for dance and a structure for your curtain call. Winter sound effects are placed in the appropriate section of the story. We realise that some schools may prefer to create their own performance without using other singers or Johnny Morris’ narration. A more ambitious production would use our script to present a full musical dance/drama. The script uses a combination of narration (delivered by children) and speech taken from the text. The costumes and set could be more sophisticated and further suggestions appear in the script. You would also have the option of using our vocal guide tracks to boost your choir or using the orchestrated backing tracks alone. A Production Pack includes:
- CD with a full performance and Johnny Morris’ narration
- Vocal guide tracks
- Broadcast quality, fully orchestrated backing tracks arranged and produced with TV composer Ed Welch
- Overture, Finale and weather sound effects for dance
- Licence for one performance
- Lyrics
- Script / Resource book
COST (including Licence) £55 + £4.25 p&p (in the UK)
Tailored performance version
We try to accommodate and anticipate your individual needs in order to make the work very simple for non-specialist teachers to produce. We would be delighted to edit a CD specifically for your unique performance and to your own requirements. In this way it is possible for you to decide exactly what you want and we will create the perfect CD for your performance. Please contact us to discuss this.
Additional items such as children’s CDs and a Piano/ Vocal/ Guitar score are also available.
NEW SELFISH GIANT (for Key Stage 2)
Our adaptation of The Selfish Giant has undergone many changes during it's lifetime and the present format has proved to be the most flexible and adaptable and the one for which we have won the most acclaim. The narrative songs are especially suited to a dance/drama presentation and our resource book gives many ideas for production. We also include ideas and characters taken from the proposed television animation series that teachers enjoy weaving into a fuller script of their own devising. One such script was sent to us by Adam Smith and we liked it so much that we wanted to make it available as an optional extra for schools who want to make more of the drama.
The script has retained the mystical and magical elements that Spike Milligan so loved, and balanced it with delicious topical humour. The influences of Catherine Tate and Little Britain can be detected and even Bob the Builder makes an appearance! The script costs £25.00 and can only be purchased with a full pack.
